We May Have Found the Perfect Floor

The Perfect Floor

Earlier this year we decided to add a new and very interesting floor to our product mix. When we first saw COREtec Plus our first impression was “WOW, what a beautiful floor!,” and then we learned about COREtec Plus’s incredible benefits. Now having sold many COREtec Plus floors to our customers since then and listening to their enthusiastic praises, we are thinking that indeed we just may have found the perfect floor.

COREtec Plus is an engineered Luxury VInyl Plank & Tile made in the U.S. This floor truly represents the next revolution in luxury vinyl flooring. This entirely new category of vinyl is a great alternative to glue down LVT, locking LVT or laminate flooring. COREtec Plus has the look for any style and unmatched performance for any room in your home. Here a just some of the benefits.

100% Waterproof – COREtec Plus floors can be installed in wet areas and will never swell when exposed to water and are backed by a lifetime waterproof warranty.

Innovative – CORETEC Plus’s construction is extremely stable and will not expand or contract.

Durable – COREtec Plus features a 20mil commercial rated wear layer for maximum durability. Two coats of UV acrylic finish provides superior stain resistance and cleanability.

Comfortable – You can enjoy the look of wood or stone with the comfort of cork. COREtec Plus is a much quieter and warmer floor than ordinary floors and requires no additional underlayment.

Cork Backing – This is the real “genius” innovation of this floor. The addition of cork backing provides added sound insulation, naturally resists mold & mildew, absorbs subfloor imperfections and means there is no need for separate underlayment.

No written word can hope to describe the visual beauty of this floor. COREtec Plus really needs to be seen to be appreciated. When you combine the list of benefits with the tremendous visual appeal you will readily see how this floor has become a staff favorite.

New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

Kitchen Remodel-jan32014blogThis time of the year is when people are making New Year’s resolutions. You probably have already made some of your own. Some of the most common ones deal with stopping smoking, dieting and getting a better job. Most people find they need a little help from someone else or a plan to accomplish these lifestyle changes.

You rapidly find that there is assistance for all of these lifestyle changes and quite a few different methods, tools and information that can see you through these kinds of resolutions. It is not real easy, all on your own, to make these very valuable changes, however, what can help is to find something for which you can be resolute about that will provide you with that ‘Quick Win’ you need to give you the confidence for making those other lifestyle changes.

With the assistance from one of our painting and decorating stores in Westlake, Berea or North Royalton you can make some New Year’s resolutions for your home. There are always things about your home, just as there are things about yourself, you would like to change. Now might be the best time to make a resolution that you can definitely keep with the help of home decorating professionals.

Some Recommendations For New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home

Take a close look at your home with the idea of making a short list of things to be resolute about. When you have seen a few of these things that just need attention, make that list in the form of a resolution and then visit one of our painting and decorating stores for the help we offer. A few New Year’s resolutions to get that list started:

  • ‘Make this room brighter’ – This room may be the kitchen, bathroom, living areas or, even better, the exercise room you will need for one of your other resolutions. This may mean different curtains, a brighter paint on the walls or ceilings or a new floor. The painting and decorating stores in Westlake, North Royalton and Berea have many selections of each category that will help you to make this resolution a reality.
  • ‘This floor needs to be more cleanable’ - It does not matter which floor you are talking about, a harder, more sanitary surface can be found. You may need a vinyl, laminate or ceramic tile floor installed.
  • ‘I need more organization here’ - Having a place for everything and everything definitely in that place is a good feeling going into the New Year. The painting and decorating stores in Westlake, North Royalton and Berea are in the best position to help you with this resolution. These interior decorating professionals will help you get on track with designs and storage options you might not have thought about.
  • ‘My bedroom needs some attention’ - You might want to be a little more specific than that, however, there is much that can be done in any bedroom. The top treatments, such as cascades, swags and valances, or the blinds and shades down through the bedding and accessories can all be coordinated with the right colors, tones and just the right flooring to bring the entire room into order and make that statement about who you are and what you want.
  • Begin a project that you have thought about but haven’t gotten around to. A room that is dormant and used, right now, as a storage area would be a good start. A spare bedroom, complete with the best flooring, draperies and furniture would have helped this last Holiday season.
  • Look for other projects and tasks around the house that can make it a welcoming place for the family, friends and, yes, the extended family as they come and visit. The bathroom might need to be tiled in order to make it more durable. A fresh coat of paint in the kitchen may be just what you need to transform that space.

With the help of our design professionals at our painting and decorating stores in Westlake, North Royalton and Berea you can rediscover what you loved about your home when you moved in. You can make or remake each and every room into the warm and loving space that it was and can be again.

A Last Few Ideas For New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home Could Be:

  • Learn to love your home again. This is the domicile that represents the largest investment most people make. It is the home that is the safe zone when you come home from work and when the kids are away from school. It is the place into which you welcome visitors and extend your hand of friendship and a warm meal. Since this is a very good resolution, the next one will help as well.
  • Buy a plant and locate it where everyone can see it and be comforted by it.

How to Host the Perfect Dinner Party

bigstock-Decorated-Christmas-Dinner-Tab-48434702-nov292013With the holiday season right around the corner, dinner parties are all the rage. Throwing dinner parties may seem like a daunting task, but with a little planning and a little luck, you can pull off the perfect dinner party like the pros. Here are a few tips on how to host the perfect dinner party:

Invitations

No dinner party is complete without invitations. Having formal invitations not only serves as beautiful way to make your guests feel special, it also serves as a reminder to them as well as communicating the theme and tone for your event. It’s not necessary to send paper invitations anymore, however. You can send beautifully custom designed invitations via email through many different sites on the Internet. Not only is this the easiest and least expensive way of sending invitations, it’s also eco-friendly and they allow your guests to RSVP without ever picking up the phone. Send out your invitations between two and three weeks in advance. This allows your guests plenty of time to RSVP while giving you ample time to plan and prep for the party. And while there is never a limit to the number of people you invite to your soiree, keeping the guest list to between 8-10 people gives you a more intimate setting that really lets people connect and keeps your budget under control.

Table Setting

One of the first considerations you need to think about for your dinner party is your theme and table setting. Floral centerpieces work with a number of themes and are an inexpensive way to create a beautiful table. The rule of thumb for floral centerpieces is to use flowers that are in season and keep them low enough so that your guests can talk to each other without straining to see over them. Floral centerpieces can be accented by candles, but if you choose to go this route, make sure that you use unscented candles. This way the scents of your candles won’t compete with the smells of your food. Other accents include using matching dinnerware that incorporates your theme including appropriately patterned cocktail napkins, table linens and rings and other small details. Keep in mind the number of people you are inviting and the size of your table. You don’t want to crowd your guests’ dining experience with a lot of extraneous decoration.

Seating

When it comes to how to host the perfect dinner party, assigned seating isn’t a requirement, but if you know that there are certain members of your party that aren’t exactly on the best of terms, you can add place cards to your seating in order to ensure minimal interaction between these parties. Of course, you can also use assigned seating as a way to introduce certain people if you are looking to play matchmaker or want to foster new friendships.  And, of course, adding place cards to your table is yet another way to add a splash of color and elegance to your table. You can use a software program to create them or letter them yourself.

Music

No dinner party is complete without music. Music should be used to create ambiance. It should be soft enough that your guests can speak to each other without competing with it, but noticeable in the background. Having music playing in the background prevents awkward silences at the table while your guests are eating and during natural lulls in conversation. Streaming music sources are great for this type of accompaniment and a station should be built that will accentuate your theme but not offend anyone.

Hors D’oeuvres

By placing hors d’oeuvres out in an easy to access place, you give your guests something to munch on while you finish up preparing the meal. It is also a great opportunity for your guests to gather around and mingle before sitting down to eat. Finger foods are great because they are easy to make and don’t require a lot of effort to eat. This allows your guests to wander about the room and mingle. Cheese and crackers or vegetables, sweets, and other easy to prepare fare all work well. If the gathering is more formal, you might look to offer something a bit more upscale, but sticking with finger foods and one bite offerings will suffice.

Dinner

Before deciding on your menu, make sure that you have accounted for your guests’ food sensitivities and likes/dislikes. You can address this during the invitation process or call each one individually after the RSVP to ensure that you don’t offer foods that make people uncomfortable. The last thing you want is for your guests to go hungry or go on a hunger strike to protest your meal. Also, stick with foods that you’ve had the chance to prepare before. This allows you a greater chance of ensuring that your guests will have edible food the day of your event rather than excuses and takeout fare. Your guests will enjoy a simple homemade meal over an elaborate gourmet meal any day of the week. Your event is more about the camaraderie of good friends rather than about the skill level of your cooking.

Drinks

When it comes to offering drinks, keep it simple. Unless you have a hired bartender for the affair, the last thing you want to do is to get stuck in the kitchen making elaborate frozen drinks. Stick with a favorite bottle of wine and maybe one signature mixed drink that doesn’t require a lot of effort. This keeps everyone visiting rather than waiting on drinks.

Last but not least, don’t forget to enjoy yourself. If the hostess is tense, the entire party will be tense and unsuccessful. Prepare for the night and then relax and enjoy the fruits of your efforts as well as your guests.

Pucher’s Decorating Center wishes you and your family a wonderful holiday season!

Decorating Your Home for the Holidays

bigstock-Details-for-aThanksgiving-tabl-14088911-frinov12013Decorating for the holidays can be a very stressful time. There are so many fine details involved in creating the perfect atmosphere for the home. Plus, decorating trends change from year to year, so it is important to keep up with current fashions, even if you are going for that traditional holiday appeal. With these simple steps for decorating, anyone can create perfection in their Berea home and have a warm, inviting area to greet guests.

Appeal to All 5 Senses

When creating any environment it is important to appeal to every sense. This helps guests feel completely emerged in the room and creates a professional look when complete. While this may sound like a difficult chore, it is actually very simple to find items that appeal to sight, touch, sound, taste, and smell. Decorating homes with items that appeal to each of these senses will help you to establish the holiday mood.

Sight is the biggest one, but sticking with one theme will help you appeal to this sense easily. Touch is one that mostly refers to using comforting furniture or a warm fireplace to make people feel relaxed. For scent, place scented candles or potpourri in the room. Play soft music in the background that compliments your theme. Lastly, have something that appeals to taste in the room, whether it be a bowl of sweets or a decorative ornament, this will help people get in the holiday spirit.

Choose a Different Theme for the Season

Decorating your home for the holidays is more than working with what you have. While it is impractical to change out furniture when seasons change, working with the colors of the room to achieve a completely different look is. Choose two to three colors, incorporating your normal colors as one of them. Avoid distracting colors like pinks and purples. Instead include blues, reds, whites, golds, or browns in your holiday décor. Then, rearrange your furniture so that it faces a different point in the room, such as the fireplace, to give the room a completely different feel.

Invest in a collection of décor that can grow with you as the years go by. Vintage decorations are always eye-catching and can easily become heirlooms. Find one collection that really appeals to you and then personalize it with lighting and seasonal knickknacks. Part of the holiday spirit is abundance, so really focus on the details of your collection and theme to create a very big impression on your guests.

Light Up the Home for the Holidays

Another important aspect regardless of the décor is the lighting. During the holiday season, there are so many different choices that can change the entire look of the room. Since it is important to stick with a two or three color pallet when designing the room, you will need to find sources of light that can go with any look and remain neutral while providing a warm, inviting glow.

Candles are an excellent source of lighting that can help create a relaxing holiday space. Because the glow from each candle can be very dim, you may want to consider an abundance of candles hidden among the décor. Thick, bold candles can be a focal point in any table centerpiece or be placed above the mantle. With plenty of candles in the room, one can easily avoid any electric lighting if they so choose.

For those who choose an all-electric holiday, make sure the bulbs you choose are in neutral colors. White bulbs are the easiest to replace and will compliment any décor. When lighting a tree, use the bulbs sparingly to create a warm glow, rather than a bright light. The tree is naturally a focal point, but making the lighting a bit dimmer helps it fade gracefully into the background. The décor in the room becomes a very welcoming space, rather than a tourist attraction.

Don’t Forget the Trees

One of the first places to start decorating is the tree. Although the tree should ideally match the feel of the room, many people choose to model their décor after the tree. The tree is naturally a focal point in any holiday room, and while the design can be as busy as one likes, it can be undecorated and still get attention. If you haven’t picked out a holiday collection yet, try browsing ornaments first and find a couple sets that you like.

For some, sticking with one theme is difficult. People send and receive ornaments as gifts or acquire them through events. Perhaps there is a family heirloom that doesn’t quite match that you’d like to use. One way to get around this is to have small trees in multiple rooms, along with your big tree. The smaller trees can have their own themes. Not only does this help to keep crowds scattered in large parties, it allows you to have multiple tree themes that can incorporate different ornaments. For example, if you don’t want that green ‘Best Mom Ever’ ornament on the large red and white tree, you could make a green ornament tree and place it in a small side room. This gives you more flexibility in the decorating choices you make.

A Very Healthy Hand Cleaner

paintingMany times when you are painting, no matter how hard you try, that paint you are using winds up on your hands, forearms and many other places on your body as well. And that leaves the question “How do I get this stuff off of me?”

If you are using an oil based paint or varnish, many people will make the huge mistake of removing the paint with paint thinner, gasoline or worse. This is a very bad idea. But wait, there is a great solution.

What about if you are using a water base paint and the paint dries on your skin. How do you remove this newly acquired “second skin?”

What about cleaning your bicycle chain and now you have old, greasy chain lube on your hands? How do you get this grease off of your hands?

Try this secret – Coconut Oil!! Coconut oil will almost magically remove oil paint, grease and oily substances from your hands quickly and easily. You will be pleasantly surprised as to how well this works. After removing the oil, paint, or grease from your hands, simply wash off the remaining coconut oil with hand soap. And here is the really great news – coconut oil is great for your skin as well.

Here is another tip. BEFORE painting with an oil or latex paint or doing any grimy household chores, apply a light coating of coconut oil on your hands and forearms (or any other body parts). This will help prevent the products you are using from penetrating your skin and makes cleanup a snap.

You can find coconut oil at any health food store, most grocery stores and at all Trader Joes.

So there you have it – a healthy hand cleaner with a great benefit – the smell will take you away to that tropical beach you (and as I am told, my wife,) would rather be on!

Prepare Your Home For the Holidays

Pucher's Decorating CentersWith the holidays approaching, you are probably dreaming of getting your home cleaned, organized and ready for the splendor that awaits. The reality of the situation can also be frightening, though, as you look around your home and begin a check list of all that needs to happen.

If you are worried about bringing your current state of chaos into focus for the holidays, some of the following home decorating ideas can help. You can take control and make your home look spectacular this coming holiday season in by visiting a Pucher’s store in Berea, Westlake and North Royalton. Instead of stressing out about what you are going to do, you can take control with a few simple tips and tricks to spruce your home and prepare for a joyous holiday season.

Focusing Your Attention on Organizing and Cleaning

Every week tackle a single room or area by applying four key skills to organize your home – eliminate clutter, organize, clean and plan for the holiday decorating touches that will make your home  look amazing. In the early stages of the plan, focus on your personal spaces, which make it easier to plan for the approaching season and give you the organized space you’ll need for decorations, craft gifts, wrapping and Christmas card writing.

With Thanksgiving Day coming closer, storage areas and food preparation areas should be the main focus to help plan the menu, bake treats and cook delicious meals for the family to enjoy. By the time December rolls around, the focus shifts to organizing public spaces and going through a final cleaning phase. By the middle of the month, your home will be cleaned, organized and ready for everyone to enjoy the holidays.

Once the holiday season is over, get a jump on organizing your space for the New Year by debriefing, storing your decorations and noting things you’d like to remember for the celebration next year while it is fresh in your mind.

Decorating the Space Should be Enjoyable

Holidays mean a time of love and celebration with your friends and family but it can also be stressful if you are worried about getting your home in top shape for approaching holiday guests. One way to minimize anxiety is to establish a reasonable budget and start early.  Decorating doesn’t have to be as difficult as one might think, so step in and embrace the holiday season with ease.

Try Tackling the Paint Jobs that are Small and Quick

Even though you could paint an entire room, you don’t have to take things to that extent. Save yourself money and time by harnessing the power of transforming your space with a couple of small paint jobs. Paint the trim and the molding. Choose an accent wall to paint with a color that is warm and inviting. Make a door wreath and welcome mat stand out by painting the door with a new color or add a splash of color by repainting an accent furniture piece. Home decorating can be fun and exciting if you take the time to focus your attention on the smaller things.

Upgrade the Accessories and Faucets in Your Bathroom

Since it is a room vital to every guest’s comfort, bathrooms are an important place to give your attention to. Fix leaky faucets and consider upgrading outdated accessories and bath hardware. Adding stylish antique brass or brushed chrome towel rings, towel holders and door hangers will add shine and sophistication to your space. A new mirror at the sink can go a long way towards sprucing up a small space. If your guest will be staying overnight, installing grab bars to make it easy for guests to get into and out of the tub and shower is a thoughtful touch.

Adding in New Living Room Accessories

Families tend to congregate in the den and living room before and after  meals. You want to make people feel welcome and at home in the space by updating the accessories and adding in some new ones along the way. Accessorize your home decorating with some throw pillows in rich plums, browns and blues. Nothing warms and pulls together a room like fabric so consider replacing old blinds with drapery panels or roman shades.  Fabrics that have texture as well as pattern are really popular now and work with many types of décor. Remember the floors as well – adding in an area rug over existing carpet or floors can change the look of the entire room!

Upgrading the Lighting in Key Rooms

Christmas lights are one of the first things that come to mind when thinking about lighting for the approaching holiday season. People will often overlook the fact that there are other lighting issues that should be considered when preparing for house guests. Changing the light bulbs in your closets, bathrooms, guest rooms, patio and porches a day before the guests arrive is important. Updating the interior lighting by adding in some chandeliers and sconces will add elegance to your space. Adding in motion sensing lights and path lights help illuminate the walkway for those who arrive in the evening.

Holidays are a great time to have fun and enjoy spending time with those you love. You want to make sure you provide them with a holiday experience that everyone will enjoy and remember for years to come. Prepare your Berea, Westlake and North Royalton home with simple home decorating tips to make sure you have everything in order to enjoy your time bonding together and enjoying the company of your friends and family.

8 Reasons to Hire a Decorator

8 reasons to hire a decoratorYour home is a reflection of who you are. As such, when you decorate your home, always put your best foot forward. That’s often easier said than done, as there are times when even your best efforts fall short of the mark. That’s where a decorator can make a huge difference. A decorator has the expertise and ability to tie things together, to mix and match, to coordinate and blend and ultimately to find the style that ties in perfectly with your ideas.

At Pucher’s, we feel strongly about the benefits of using our decorator services for your home project. A decorator can pull your project together and add special touches that will not only look terrific, but will ultimately save you money. Our staff is accustomed to working with clients and utilizing items that reflect the latest trends in those special touches that make a difference. A decorator can help by showing you how to proceed with your project or to coordinate your efforts and manage your time. A decorator can be a valuable asset and your best friend during your decorating phase. Here are eight ways how:

 1. Manage Your Budget and Save Money

A decorator can help you avoid costly mistakes that will cost you dollars to correct or assist in choosing the right color combinations, perfect carpet, draperies, wallpaper and accent features. Whatever it is, wrong choices will cost you extra to replace or redo.

 2. The Eyes of a Professional

Decorators are involved with their craft full-time. As such, they can use their experience to your advantage. Because they are detached from your home and all its treasures, they see these items differently than you. They can find perfect settings for some of your treasured or underutilized items, which allow you to maintain a sense of continuity with some of your very special pieces.

 3. Keeping Track of Your Spending

Budgeting comes into play, not only in tracking the dollars spent, but also the time spent on your project. Locating and purchasing the various resources required to complete your project can take untold hours of your time and quickly erode your finances. A decorator is a wealth of information, a walking talking catalog of sources that have application in your decor. She knows where your purse strings are and when they need to be drawn. Consequently, she will work with those product lines that fit nicely in your price range. Often, she will have special arrangements with certain purveyors that can actually add up to more dollars saved. Plus, the decor items you end up with will not be found in the high volume shops and big box stores.

 4. A Go-Between

When your decorator and you are on the same page, she can be entrusted to handle details between your contractor and/or architect. Often these are the little details we are least prepared for: details like light fixture placement, special effects, décor arrangements and more.

5. Every Home Needs a Little OMG Sizzle In The Pot.

Decorators have made names for themselves by providing a touch of excitement to their projects. Their goal is to inspire a jaw dropping OMG reaction when people enter a room. They have ideas that we can’t imagine.

 6. Pre-Sale

Planning to sell your home? A decorator can increase your home’s desirability.  If your home is in the medium to upper price range, spending some money to freshen it may be a wise investment. An up to date look is less likely to languish on the unsold charts for months. Your decorator, along with help from one of her realtor contacts can help determine a reasonable amount to spend on the project and prevent you from going overboard with your spending.

 7. Eyes Center

If you are not sure what needs to be done to your home and consequently not certain where to begin, a decorator can give you an unbiased proposal of the situation. She can tell you what’s right and what’s wrong with your space and show you how to make the most of what you have. That should be the intent of your first meeting with a decorator from Pucher’s, painting and decorating stores in Westlake, Berea and North Royalton.

8. Discovery

When our decorator has successfully completed her job, the results should convey to the world who you are — your interests, experiences, your personality.

Among the painting and decorating stores in Westlake, Berea and North Royalton, you will find the three Pucher’s Decorating Centers. The company has made a name for itself as a leader in decorative services throughout the region. In addition to their excellent on staff decorators, the company is known for their expertise and inventory of flooring, window treatments, fabrics draperies and paint. Part of Pucher’s success and reputation can be attributed to their Free In-Store or phone consultation service. Call us today to schedule your free in-store consultation.

How to Save Energy Costs With Shades and Window Treatments

decorating with whiteWe are constantly looking for new ways to cut costs and save money. And it’s understandable to avoid spending money on home updates, even if it will lead to a more valued and energy efficient home in the long run. If you’re really looking to save money, you need to change your way of thinking about windows. Windows offer very little resistance to the flow of heat, and can allow up to 50% of your home’s heating and cooling expenses to flow right through them. If you want to cut energy costs, make your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and add aesthetic value to your home with a huge variety of energy efficient options, then you may be interested in the help we are here to provide.

An important thing to figure out is which windows need the most and the least attention. West-facing windows admit the hottest light and need the most coverage, whereas south-facing windows are the most important natural light source and do not need major coverage.

Simple Window Coverage

For some of the simplest and most effective window coverage, try installing window shades. In the summer, you should lower shades on all sunlit windows. During the winter, however, you should pay special attention to the south-facing windows. For the best results in energy savings, raise shades on those windows during the day, and lower them at night. Some options that provide maximum energy efficiency include honeycomb or cellular shades, shutters, roman shades, and horizontal sheer blinds. These shades act as both insulation and air barrier, and control air infiltration more effectively than other soft window treatments.

Window blinds are more effective at reducing summer heat gain than reducing winter heat loss. Highly reflective blinds are able to control and reduce heat gain in the summer months by up to 45%. Additionally, they can be adjusted to block and reflect direct sunlight onto a light-colored ceiling, which will diffuse the light without much heat or glare.

If you’re installing shades, blinds, or draperies, it is important to install them properly for the best results. This involves hanging or mounting them as close to windows and walls as possible in order to establish a sealed air space. You can also use Velcro or magnetic tape on the sides and bottoms of drapes, which can reduce heat loss up to 25%. However, it is best to have a professional perform a custom treatment on your home.

Pucher’s has a large selection of wood blinds, vertical blinds, mini blinds, shutters, Roman shades, pleated shades, cellular honeycomb shades, roller shades, and Silhouettes. We also have tons of styles, colors, and operating systems available to fit all of your various needs. Because of our buying power, we discount many of our fabric lines 10-15% every day! Our window treatments are all quality products at great values. With the cost you will also get:

  • Free expert design consultants (in-store)
  • Free measures
  • Lifetime installation warranty
  • Installer professionalism guarantee
  • “No surprises” price quotes
  • Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner 2011

These factors are extremely helpful aids in the already affordable window treatments we have to offer. The right window treatments can actually pay for themselves in as little as seven years in Northern Ohio. And with the help of our expert design consultants and professional installers, the “right” and most energy efficient window treatment is simple to acquire. Call one of stores in Cleveland, Berea or North Royalton today for a free in-home consultation, and we’ll bring the fabric samples to you.

Design Trends: Go Bold With White

design trends whiteWhite is one of the most general and mass appealing colors you can pick. But is it always a safe choice? Believe it or not, you have to know how to manage whites and off-whites just as much as you would if you were considering a bold or pastel color. The wrong shade of white paired with certain aspects of a room can completely pull that room in the wrong direction. You’ll notice that something feels off, but you probably won’t be able to pinpoint exactly what it is that is making you uneasy. The problem that you may not be picking up is in the pure and reflective aspects of the color white. This will lead to it absorbing the colors surrounding it. Suddenly the blank white wall you were looking to match with a blue sofa might appear to have blue tints. Don’t get discouraged from using whites or off-whites just yet, though. These blends can bring great benefits, if paired correctly and specifically according to your individual taste and style.

White is Flawless

One of the best things about white is that it will match just about everything and can blend flawlessly into most design schemes. It has been said that the perfect color balance in a room is created using three or more colors—one of which being white or off-white. These blends can make bolder colors pop, and enhance other elements of the room. But which colors go best with which whites? With so many whites, off-whites, and whites with undertones to choose from, you may feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to color selection. Our in-house design consultants can help you with any questions you might have regarding your home color scheme. However, we have also provided some tips so that you can develop some knowledge about how white might affect the ambiance of your home.

For ceilings and walls, we recommend sticking with a pure white with no undertones, or white with a hint of gray. Additionally, whites with undertones of khaki or buttercream yellow are pleasant for spaces consisting of warmer tones. Both of the off-whites recommended are universally appealing. For additional white and off-white pairing affects we suggest the following advice:

  • Warm off-whites can create feelings of comfort
  • Cool off-whites will offer a contemporary look
  • Off-white with a hint of red can result in a feminine pink
  • Hints of blue and green in off-white colors will bring about a sense of relaxation
  • Off-whites with creamy undertones are a good choice for rooms with elements of warm browns and tans
  • Cleaner off-whites are best with suggestions of color with cooler grays and blacks

It is also important to remember that off-white will often take a back seat to other features in the room. Darker colors do have the potential to swallow whites up, but colorful furniture can stand out among the plain colors. You also want to consider how the whites and off-whites will look in different settings. Try sampling colors in the space that they will be painted so that you can see how it will look in both natural and artificial light. You will hopefully select a color that is satisfying 24/7, providing a welcoming feel during the day and a romantic ambiance at night.

Many of these affects may turn out great for some people, but be an eye sore for others, depending on each individual’s desired result. Everyone will have a different taste in color selection, and for the best results, you may want to seek the advice of our design consultants at Pucher’s. We can answer any questions you may have regarding the interior of your home, and we offer a large range of paints and wallpapers for your convenience. Design Trends – Bamboo Flooring

bamboo flooringWhen you’re looking for home decorating options, Cleveland has plenty to offer. In a place like Cleveland which experiences a lot of different extreme weather conditions during both summers and winters, you have to choose materials that can withstand and literally weather such climatic conditions. Consult with your architect or interior decorator about the different areas in your home, their planned purpose and the ideal floors and walls and other furniture and fittings. Your floor is literally the most used and often abused space in your home, especially if you have young children and pets. You walk on them as well as run, stamp, spill and scratch them. Your flooring should be strong enough to withstand all that apart from the weather and the resultant variations in temperature and humidity.

The most favored traditional floors have been wood. In recent years, people are moving away from wood to bamboo because of the abundant supply of bamboo, and its growth rate. Bamboo matures quite quickly; where trees like teak, pine and oak might take fifty years to grow and be ready for lumber, bamboo is usually available in five! This makes the replenishment of bamboo faster, and hence people looking for a greener home opt for bamboo floors. Bamboo is a sustainable plant and is also available in a wide range of varieties making it suitable for flooring for the entire home, for all the rooms from nursery and bedrooms to the kitchen and the patio.

The various kinds of bamboo available for flooring in Cleveland depend on the type of plant and the way it is harvested. The most popular bamboo floors are of two types, called strand woven bamboo and fused fiber bamboo. The strand woven bamboo is much stronger and is used for floors where there will be a lot of foot traffic. The fused fiber bamboo floor looks more attractive and so can be used for decorating purposes like a hotel lobby or the patio that receives less foot traffic.

There are no standard grading systems for bamboo available, and so the seller or manufacturer reputation is very crucial when you’re thinking of going with bamboo floors. You need to learn about the different kinds of bamboo and their characteristics to make an informed choice. The age of the bamboo plant when it is harvested dictates its hardness and therefore its durability too. Ideally the plant should be at six to nine years of age when it is harvested for timber. At six to nine years bamboo becomes very, very hard and durable and is a great wearing floor. There are some engineered bamboo floors available today that combine a top layer of bamboo with layers of other wood which make them strong, light weight and yet durable.  The biggest scam in bamboo is the cheaper imports that sell for $3 – $4 that are only three years old. They are actually soft and do not hold up well – hence the lower price. Trust us – you do not want a floor made of three year old bamboo.

At Pucher’s, started by Carl Pucher in 1928, we have been providing floors to the Cleveland area for the last three generations. Now headed by the grandson of Carl Pucher, Pucher’s is a by-word for flooring in and around the Cleveland area in North East Ohio. Our in-house design consultants can help you with any questions you might have regarding your home interiors. We also have a range of paints, wallpapers, other household products, cleaning agents, furnishings, fittings, window treatments, etc. apart from just floors. Anything you need for your home, you can find it at Pucher’s. Call us today for a free quote or visit us for a free consultation.

The Ease of Working With a Decorator

working with a decoratorYou have saved up for years and finally have your dream home built to your specifications so that you and your family can live happily for years to come. The next step is the interior decoration, like choosing walls, floors and window treatments, paint colors for the exterior and the interior and other such difficult decisions. Your home should be a relaxing place, a sanctuary. Your home should be a reflection of you. The modern version of “show me your friends, and I will tell you who you are,” is “show me your home and I will tell you who you are.”

However, your family members will also want their needs and personalities to be reflected in their rooms and private areas. If you feel it is a daunting task, it is better to engage a professional interior designer or decorator. The former gets involved with the architect and advises on the placement of rooms and planned activities for different spaces, based on the available light and other factors. The latter is typically engaged after the house is built to advise on floors, wall colors, draperies and other furniture and fittings to provide harmony and aesthetic appeal.

Engage with a Decorator

You don’t have to worry about any aspect of your interiors when you engage an interior decorator to do your home; you just have to state your preferences and have a beautiful home you can proudly show off. You can be assured of getting your home outfitted with the best possible floors, draperies, rugs, etc. as your decorator will be on top of the latest trends and innovations. You can save yourself both time and stress when you engage a decorator to help with your home décor, not to mention opting for something unsuitable and then having to get it fixed. Such costly do-overs can be avoided when you hire an interior decorator to help in fixing up your home.

Whether you are building, remodeling or redecorating your home, this time can very stressful to you. Oftentimes you will not know where to even begin. An interior decorator will relieve the stress and take the burden off of you. They will assist in space planning and décor by suggesting patterns, paints, flooring, and window treatments just to name a few. A decorator provides comfort and the security of knowing the services will be performed and completed without troubling you. This frees up your time and saves you money and frustration.

At Pucher’s we are fully aware of the importance of having your home look beautiful and appealing. You need to have a home that is welcoming, relaxing and soothing. Household Uses for Kitchen Staples

cleaning With just a few other ingredients added, vinegar can turn into a household disinfectant, furniture polish, stain remover and glass cleaner. Vinegar is a staple in any pantry. Its acidity and neutralizing properties make vinegar the perfect choice for cleaning, disinfecting, softening and shining. You can use vinegar from the bathroom to the kitchen to take full advantage of this household staple. Take advantage of this multitalented kitchen staple by following these easy guidelines.

Grease Cutter: The acid in vinegar is a grease cutter. Dip a sponge into vinegar and wipe down your stovetop, microwave and dirty dishes.

Disinfectant: To make an all-purpose disinfecting solution, dilute 1 part vinegar in 4 parts water and use anywhere that germs can be found such as countertops, phones, doorknobs and remote controls.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner: By pouring 1 cup of vinegar in the bowl, you can clean, disinfect and deodorize your toilet. Allow the vinegar to sit for one hour then use a brush to remove rings and flush.

Drain Cleaner: To maintain a clog-free drain, pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain and follow up with ½ cup of vinegar. After the foaming subsides, pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain. Remove any hair and unwanted debris with a wire. If the drain is still slow, repeat the process.

Glass Cleaner: Combine 2 cups of water, ¼ cup vinegar and ½ teaspoon liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray onto glass and wipe down with newspaper for a streak-free shine.

Residue Remover: Use a vinegar-water solution to remove the sticky residue that is left behind by labels and stickers.

Hair Rinse: Hair products and shampoos can leave behind residue, leaving your hair dull. Dilute 2 tablespoons vinegar and 2 tablespoons lemon juice in 3 cups water to remove buildup. Mix well. After shampooing, pour the vinegar mixture over your hair before rinsing with water. The vinegar will close the cuticle and will leave hair soft and shiny.

Furniture Polish: Mix ¼ cup olive oil, 4 tablespoons vinegar and 2 teaspoons lemon juice in a spray bottle. Shake well and refrigerate any solution remaining to keep from going bad.

Stain Remover: Rid of grass stains and blood spots by mixing ½ cup white vinegar, ¼ cup baking soda and 3 cups water in a spray bottle. Spray the stain and then toss into the washer.

Laundry Softener: Conventional fabric softener remains in clothing oftentimes causing irritation. For softer laundry, add ½ cup vinegar to the rinse cycle.

Dandruff Preventer: The acid in vinegar helps kill some of the bacteria responsible for dandruff. By rinsing with vinegar, you can deep-clean your scalp and remove dead skin cells. Mix ½ cup vinegar, ½ cup fresh mint leaves (or 1 tablespoon dried leaves) and 1 cup boiling water for a no-dandruff rinse. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature and then pour over scalp after shampooing. Rinse mixture from hair with water.

Wart Killer: Dip a cotton ball into vinegar and place over wart with a bandage. Change the cotton ball on a daily basis. The acid in the vinegar will eat away at the wart. Be sure to keep your skin moisturized around the wart.

Breath Freshener: Rinse your mouth with 2 tablespoons vinegar and 1 tablespoon salt diluted in 1 cup water. The rinse can remove onion and garlic odors.

Paintbrush Softener: Dip hardened bristles into a bowl of vinegar for one hour or less. Rinse the bristles with warm water and soap and let dry before use.

Rust Remover: Soak rusted nuts, bolts, nails or tools into a bath of vinegar for several hours. If the vinegar becomes cloudy, change the vinegar. After soaking, wipe away the rust with a clean cloth.

How to Clean Tile

cleaningCeramic tiles need to be cleaned frequently to keep them in top condition. Here are a few tips on how to clean your ceramic tile floors:

Sweeping

Ceramic tiles are highly susceptible to dirt. Textured tiles in particular get dirty pretty quickly. Sweeping your tiles regularly loosens the dirt and gets rid of all but the toughest grime. You can use your vacuum cleaner to sweep your tiles. Avoid using a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar since this can easily scratch and dull the tiles. Use an attachment on the vacuum cleaner to suck up loose dirt along tile edges and between the tiles.

Mats

Use door mats at home to keep dirt and grime from getting inside the house. Shake the door mats often to loosen the dirt. Less dirt on your tiles not only means less cleaning, but also reduces wear on the tiles.

Mopping

Ceramic tiles are best damp-mopped using grout and tile cleaners that are recommended by the tile manufacturer. If the tiles are particularly dirty, spot clean your floor using a clean cloth or wet sponge using the recommended tile cleaners.

Heavy Cleaning

Scrub your ceramic tiles lightly using a soft brush. An electric polisher/scrubber is ideal for use on textured tiles. Use a mild detergent for cleaning. After the tiles are clean, rinse them thoroughly using clean warm water so as to remove any leftover residue. You can wipe down the tiles using a clean towel to remove any traces of film on the surface.

If you have soft water at your home, you can use an all-purpose cleaner. Apply the cleaner to your floor then let it stand for 3-5 minutes. Scrub the tiles lightly using a sponge, rinse well, and your tiles should be sparkling clean.

You can use cleaning products from your local hardware or grocery store to remove hard water deposits, mildew stains, and soap scum from your ceramic tiles. Read the instructions carefully to ensure that the product is the right one for your tile. Rinse well then wipe the tiles down to obtain a sparkling shine.

Dos and Don’ts of Tile Cleaning

Dos

  • Do clean up any spills as quickly as they happen to avoid staining your grout.
  • Do remember that despite the exceptional longevity of ceramic tiles, they are not indestructible and can crack up if excessive force or very heavy loads are placed on them.
  • Do take proper precautions when placing heavy objects or moving them on ceramic tile.
  • Do cover your table and furniture legs with protectors before placing them on your ceramic tile flooring to avoid scratching it.
  • Do remember that if you need to replace some of your ceramic tiles, the new tiles are bound to look different from the older tiles. This should not worry you since with time the new tiles will eventually blend in with the older ones. Try and purchase replacement tiles that are closest to the existing tiles in terms of dye lot and texture.

Don’ts

  • Do not use scouring powders, steel wool, or any other abrasives on your tiles since these can easily scratch the finish.
  • Do not use ammonia-based cleaners or bleach on your tile. These substances can discolor the grout especially if they are used frequently.

Caulking and Sealing

Once the tiles have been laid and then grouted, ensure that you caulk any areas that are frequently exposed to water. Caulking keeps the tiles looking sprightly and new and prevents subsurface damage that can badly damage the tiles. You can seal your tiles and grout if you deem it necessary. Sealing the tile and grout protects them from dirt stains and spills and thus keeps them looking sparkling. Grout colorants can be used to transform the original grout color and can act as a form of sealant. Non-epoxy grout joints are best treated using a silicone sealer.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your ceramic tile flooring will keep it looking as good as new for many years.

How Ceramic Tile is Made

ceramic tileNot too long ago ceramic tiles were hand-made. A mound of wet clay was carefully shaped using a wooden mold and then left in the sun to dry or fired in brick kilns. Although a small percentage of ceramic tiles are still made the traditional way, the vast majority are made through a process known as ‘dry pressing’ or ‘dust pressing.’ This process is highly efficient and requires far less time and labor to produce than previous methods, a factor that has made ceramic tiles very common in modern construction. This is opposed to the past when they were reserved for Eastern Kings only! Below are the various processes involved in ceramic tile making:

Drying

Every ceramic life begins its life as a lump of earth. The final product is essentially baked earth. Various ceramic tile manufacturers use different methods to make the tiles, but the common denominator is that all use clay as the raw material. Other ingredients such as feldspar, sand, quartz, and water are added to the clay. The ingredients are carefully mixed together in the right proportions into a ball mill in order to create a body slip. The body slip differentiates the tile’s body from its glazed topping. The body slip is 30% water. The moisture helps the different ingredients stick together. The body slip is placed into a hot dryer to remove most of the moisture. This continues until the moisture content drops to just 6%.

The drying process essentially reduces the body slip to a lump of dust. This is placed inside a large hydraulic or electric-powered press. The press uses enormous pressure to press the dust to a particular size and shape. When I say enormous pressure, that’s exactly what I mean; something in the range of a few hundred, up to 100,000 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). The pressure is necessary to give the ceramic tiles high tensile strength. Presses sometimes have shaped imprints such as diamonds and ovals that correspond to the tile shape. Once the body is pressed into shape, it’s now called the ‘‘bisque.’’ It is further dried to completely remove the moisture.

Glazing

Glaze refers to the shiny substance found on top and at the sides of ceramic tiles. Glaze is either sprayed directly or silk-screened on top of the tiles. It can be finished in either high gloss or matte. Various color pigments are added to the tile to impart the desired color. Glazing is not absolutely necessary in tile production, although it’s almost always used.

Baking

All ceramic tiles undergo baking before they are complete. The tile is referred to as a ‘‘green tile’’ just before it undergoes baking. Tiles were traditionally fired in a periodic kiln for several hours. Modern kilns, however, are the continuous type, and are far more efficient than the traditional periodic ones. Continuous kilns include roller-hearth kilns and tunnel kilns. The temperatures inside kilns are quite high and reach 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (about 1,371 degrees centigrade). High temperatures are necessary for the production of high-strength tiles.

Colors and Patterns

Tiles are re-fired by baking, using a method known as bicottura. This is used to produce tiles with many different colors and patterns. The prefix ‘bi’ in bicottura does not mean that the tile is fired only twice; in fact it can be fired several times. A different type of colored glaze is applied to the tile before each firing cycle and this is repeated until the desired final product is achieved.

The type of finish applied by the manufacturer determines how slippery the tile will be when wet. Tile manufacturers use a rating system to classify their tiles for different applications. This ranges from Class 1 to Class 5.

DIY Wallpaper Removal

bigstock-mother-with-children-remove-ol-3201059-resized-600may222013If you are planning to redecorate, the first step is to choose what you want to change. You have selected bright new wallpaper, and now it’s time to remove the old one. Stripping the old wallpaper can be quite a bit of a hassle, especially if the house is older than the 1970s, because there is a good chance that you might encounter asbestos. If you remove the wallpaper and find damage behind the wall, you have to first fix the wallboard before you can begin re-papering. If there is a doubt that you have asbestos, call in the professionals, because it is toxic and quite detrimental to your health and has to be removed from your home.

If the wallboard is in good condition, you can just sand it and prime it and start off with the new wallpaper. But if the wallpaper is mushy in some areas, then the wallboard has to be fixed before you can proceed. In case of stubborn old wallpaper, you can use diluted bleach or vinegar in a spray can to remove the old ones; bleach will help to remove mold and vinegar helps in removing stubborn old paste. However, be careful to NEVER mix the two, as the chemical reaction will lead to the formation of highly toxic gases. In case you are using vinegar, perforate the wall with a ‘paper tiger’, then apply the solvent or vinegar, and then wait for the solvent to work; scrape off.

If you want to do a more professional job, you can use a wall steamer; first you perforate the walls with a ‘paper tiger’, carefully so that you don’t perforate through the old wallpaper. Then use the steamer to apply steam which will soften the glue. This in turn will help to remove the wallpaper gently, without any scraping or pulling. Remember to prepare the floor with drop cloths so that it doesn’t get soaked during the steaming process.

If you want to remove metallic wallpaper or vinyl wallpaper use diluted fabric softener for the former and just a soaking with water for the latter is the best way to go about it. For metallic wallpaper, dilute fabric softener with water, 1:2, and then spray it, rub it in and wait for about 15 minutes. You can just peel it off easily; in stubborn areas, use a drywall scraper. For vinyl wallpaper, you can just slowly start to peel off layers with a scraper or a putty knife at the edges, and then try to peel them off in the same direction as they were pasted on. If you’re finding it difficult, then try less layers and in another direction. You can also spray some water on and wait for it to soak before trying again. In the one direction in which it was pasted, it should come off easily.

If the wallpaper has been there for several years, it will come off more easily. But remember that this can be time consuming and frustrating work and set aside time accordingly. Putting up wallpaper can be done in a weekend, but removing it can be more tedious work. Patience and persistence will pay off, and soon enough you will have a beautiful and undamaged new wall with fresh and bright wallpaper.

You can find any home improvement or decorative product you are looking for at Pucher’s. How To Get My Wood Floors Shiny Again

bigstock-Hard-wood-flooring-in-living-r-16224596-resized-600may162013Wooden floors have an ageless charm that can be captivating. The patina of a hard wood floor that glows and gleams with age and polished smooth, though worn out by foot traffic over the years has its own poignant tale to tell. There is no doubt that a polished wooden floor can be beautiful, but maintaining it can be quite hard. Regular polishing and elbow grease are a must, or the floor will look worn out and dull.

Though some people recommend usage of vinegar and water to bring back the shine to the wooden floors, the acid in the vinegar will ruin the wood in the longer run. If you want to get your wood floors shining again, get a wood finishing product. This is the only way to take care of your old wooden floors. There are many quality brands that are available that will help you bring back the sheen to your beloved floors.

Floor Prep

The first step is to properly clean the floor; sweep away all the dust and mop up the floor to remove grime and oil, if any. Use a wood cleaner to get satisfactory results.

Wood Finishing Product

If you want a glossy finish, refinish the wood using a water based wood finishing product.  These water based finishing products are more durable than wax based ones, and so will keep your wooden floors protected for longer periods of time. First clean the floors; then apply a minimum of two coats of One-step wood finish with a soft, clean cloth. Take care to apply the finish in the same direction of the wood grain, as it will enhance the grains and bring them into prominence. Then let dry for one hour at least, before applying another coat with a soft clean cloth.  Once this coat is dry, the wooden floor is hard-finished and should stay glossy for a long time.

Today wooden floors are available in a range of colors, textures and finishes to suit everyone’s tastes and décor. Your hardwood floors have to be strong enough to withstand the constant foot traffic, the scrape of furniture and pets moving around. Some of the sturdier woods that make ideal floor choices are oak, hickory and maple.  One of the recently added and popular wood choices for floors due to its eco-friendly credentials is bamboo. Though it has been used in the Far East for thousands of years, here in the US, it is a relatively new choice for wooden floors. Whatever wood you end up choosing for your floors, make sure that it is well-cared for. A weekly dusting and vacuuming is vital to the life of the floor and can extend the beauty of the floor about four times over. As long as you take good care of it by routine maintenance, your wooden floor will reflect your loving care.

At Pucher’s we know how much your home means to you. Pucher’s Household Items that Clean like the Leading Brands

bigstock-A-Bucket-with-Cleaning-Supplie-26419163apr162013Getting your house spotlessly clean often seems like a never ending battle. As soon as you have surfaces polished, disinfected, dusted, and shined, grimy dirtiness starts to creep back into your house. It can be frustrating to keep your home clean on a regular basis, but numerous scientific studies have shown that a clean home is a much healthier home. If you invest in high quality decorative services for your home, you’ll want to try extra hard to keep your home sparkling and clean in order to show off your beautiful new décor. You don’t have to head to the store and spend a fortune on cleaning products, however. There are many items already in your home that can be used to tackle tough cleaning jobs.

The Problem with Household Cleaning Products

There are two basic problems with household cleaning products that are purchased from a store. First, they can be quite expensive. If you have heavy duty cleaning jobs, you may need to invest in resupplying your cleaning product collection on a monthly basis. Many homeowners spend hundreds of dollars each year just buying the leading brands. Another problem with household cleaning products is that they often use harsh chemicals that can leave dangerous residues on the surfaces of your home. Bleach, disinfectants, oven cleaner, silver polish, and other cleaners also have dangerous odors that can cause headaches or even serious health complications. It may be best to avoid these harsh chemicals and use natural cleaning products that you already own.

White Vinegar for General Cleaning

White vinegar is one of the most incredible natural cleaning products on the planet. There are thousands of ways to use white vinegar to keep your home sparkling and clean. You can dilute white vinegar in warm water and use it as a general disinfectant and scrubbing agent for floors, tubs, sinks, counters, and just about any other non-porous surface in your home. The natural acidity of white vinegar removes tough stains and kills bacteria.

Baking Soda for Degreasing

Baking soda is a great degreasing agent because it is considered a micro-abrasion particle. The tiny particles of baking soda work to scrub away tough stains. Baking soda is also incredibly absorbent. It can soak up bad odors and tough, caked on grease with a little effort. You can even mix baking soda with vinegar to create a fizzy cleaner with enough power to challenge any of the big brands at your local store.

Lemon Juice for Hard Water Stains

Lemon juice is filled with citric acid, which makes it a powerful cleaning tool for your bathroom or kitchen. You can slice a lemon in half and rub it on hard water stains and calcium deposits for effective cleaning. Leave the lemon juice on the stain or residue for a few minutes, and then simply wipe it away with a cloth. Lemon juice may be too powerful for some surface, like wood, so be sure to do a spot test before you start scrubbing the whole house with lemons. Another great way to use lemons is as a garbage disposal disinfectant and odor eliminator. Just put lemon wedges in your garbage disposal and turn it on. The natural oils of the lemon rind will cut through grime and the fragrant lemon juice will leave your disposal fresh and clean.

A Few Other Suggestions

Polishing silver has never been easier when you use a toothbrush and some toothpaste. You can mix the toothpaste with baking soda for even more effective silver polishing. Traditional shaving cream that is white and foamy makes a great mirror cleaner, and the shaving cream will also help to prevent mirrors from fogging up in a humid bathroom.

If you want to make your home look fresh and beautiful, pairing high quality decoration services with a few handy cleaning tips can make a big difference.

Why Buy Pucher’s Paint?

buy Pucher's paintConsider this for just one moment – a single paint manufacturer often has more than 100 hues in their “white” palette. Now, if you are just starting to consider redecorating your home or office, the fact that you have thousands of hues to sort through can usually stop you in your tracks. How on earth do you go about choosing the proper colors and then the proper finishes? The answer is to ask for expert help.

Most consumers would say they just cannot afford to pay for an interior decorator’s services. That, however, is where Pucher’s enters the equation. Since 1928, they have been offering their services to the Cleveland area and have helped many satisfied customers to choose the right drapes, paint, flooring, and more.

Begin at the Beginning

Whether you believe it or not, the background color of any room will really set the immediate “tone”. Thus, it is pretty important to make the right choices, and yet the subtleties in paint colors and hues can make choosing a very challenging issue. When you turn to Pucher’s for help, however, it becomes the proverbial “piece of cake”. This is thanks to their expertise and knowledge, as well as their array of free services.

To make it simple, you will want to have a good idea of the general color scheme you intend to use. For example, you would want to say that you are hoping to have the dining room in a nice green palette. You may even want to have some color samples that appeal to you, or images from magazines that you find attractive. You could then make a visit to Pucher’s paint department. Their experts can provide you with color matching, samples, and many ideas that will help you achieve decorating success.

Whether you are considering an interior or exterior surface, thinking about  staining floors or walls, or doing a few different treatments, Pucher’s has a full line of all that is needed – including accessories necessary for painting. They can even match any other manufacturer’s colors to help you save money or get just the results desired.

The modern Pucher’s Decorating Centers actually began as the Pucher Paint Company more than seventy years ago. Over this extensive period of time, their team has developed an expert level knowledge about paint and stain. This allows them to know the ideal solutions for almost any setting, and to give clients the kind of skillful advice that ensures a high quality result.

Though many other decorating stores have to do tons of marketing and advertising, Pucher’s has developed such a good reputation in the Cleveland area that around 80% of their current clientele comes from word of mouth and recommendations. That alone speaks volumes.

Whether you are hoping for a self-priming paint that will allow you to put a new face on your living room over the weekend, or you are building a “green” home that you want treated with eco-friendly solutions, Pucher’s will have the solutions required. Start thinking about the various color schemes and decor themes you have in mind and head into their showroom to speak with their paint specialists.

You might be surprised and overwhelmed by the number of choices, but with the knowledgeable expertise of Pucher’s paint department, you will be able to choose the ideal finish and palette for your needs. The personal touch is missing in so many modern businesses, but the amazing array of services that Pucher’s clients receive shows that they take all of their clients seriously.

Flooring From Pucher’s

mar292013Flooring is a necessity and too often we attempt to take some shortcuts because we are sure that will save some money. One of the most common shortcuts taken with flooring is to go with a discount provider that sells and installs the project, and who often leaves the buyer with unsatisfactory results. Naturally, this can make it likely that a property owner ends up spending even more to get the job done properly, and it could all have been avoided by simply turning to a quality vendor.

Going with Flooring from Pucher’s

Since 1928, property owners in the Cleveland, OH area have turned to Pucher’s for their flooring needs. Today, it is one of the wisest choices that could be made because the firm has decades of experience, a commitment to top of the line customer service, and an extensive array of flooring options.

For instance, you can get the most popular types of carpeting from the most trusted manufacturers, but you can also explore options in ceramic tile, laminate, vinyl, wood, and cork flooring options too. They even have high-quality area rugs as well.

Additionally, Pucher’s makes design consultation options readily available. That means that anyone confused, overwhelmed, or simply new to the process of choosing flooring and having it properly installed can turn to their expertise and knowledge.

The Complexity of Flooring

This may be oversimplifying the matter because flooring is something that demands a great deal of time, thought, planning, and attention. After all, how do you begin to measure for an installation of laminate? How do you know just which type of carpet, and which colors to choose? What about choosing the right flooring for the type of traffic that makes its way through the room?

There are those questions and dozens more to consider. Thankfully, Pucher’s has a strong team of truly experienced and talented designers who ask their clients all of the right questions in order to guide them towards the ideal choices. While they get flooring that satisfies their decor and design preferences, the flooring from Pucher’s also lives up to their needs and their goals.

Just consider, you may be renovating a home to be as eco-friendly and green as possible. Some carpeting is not that earth-friendly, and you may be entirely unaware of the best brands or materials for your goals. The Pucher team can review all of their eco-friendly, renewable, or even recyclable flooring choices and make absolutely certain the client gets all that they had hoped.

What to Expect

This means that you can anticipate getting good choices and tons of support when you choose Pucher’s flooring choices, but you also get the many benefits that this firm offers. Free measures, expert design support, a remarkable “no regrets” guarantee, free quotes, and a vast array of flooring choices are what Cleveland area clients have come to expect. This is one of the reasons that around 80% of the firm’s business is from “word of mouth” instead of standard advertising and marketing.

So, if you are in need of a worry free flooring installation, but are confused by the choices, the installation process, or the wide range of options, you can turn to flooring from Pucher’s. They are the type of firm that your friends and neighbors would recommend because of their quality and expertise. Because flooring is something that takes such a high amount of traffic and wear and tear, and because it is a major component in our homes, it is best to get quality support and to go with a firm known for providing the best product and services at the best prices.

Trendy and Stylish Colors for the Year

paintingAre you thinking about repainting your home this year?  If so, then you should consider choosing some of the paint colors that are guaranteed to be “in” during 2013.  Below, we have listed some of the shades that are sure to be popular this year, along with the reasons why so many people are choosing them as their go-to hues for 2013.

Grays and Dark Greens

No matter what the year is, gray is always a great choice for walls in your home.  Gray is both timeless and modern, and depending on the shade that you choose for your home, it can be either dark and relaxing, or light and inviting. Pairing gray with a dark forest green will give your room a nice shot of earth tones, and will make your decorating scheme seem stylish, yet organic and at ease.  This color combination is great for rooms where you want to unwind and enjoy yourself, or simply sit and think.

Rust Red, Warm Yellow, Faded Green

Any combination of these three colors will be ideal for rooms that you want to evoke feelings of comfort and familial intimacy.  These colors are especially popular in kitchens, dining rooms, and great rooms because of the way they complement the palettes of many traditional American dishes.  As with the set of shades described above, these three colors allow you to create an aesthetic that is contemporary but will stand up well against the test of time.  Consider an accent wall or “nook” in one color and surround it with another.

Weathered Blue and Off-White

These two colors are wonderfully relaxing, but also bright enough to take full advantage of the light in rooms that receive only limited sunlight.  Many homeowners like the weathered blue for the way it reminds them of the ocean, while the off-white is reminiscent of a long stretch of sand by the shoreline.  This color scheme is good for those who want earth tones in their homes, but do not want to use darker shades, like deep reds, forest greens, and browns.  It is easy to punch up this décor with bits of accent colors like aqua, tangerine, soft pink or plum.  And as with both color sets mentioned previously, these two colors will work well no matter what other decorations you have in your home, now or in the future.

Fun Crafts for the Winter

C--Documents and Settings-pos.WESTLAKE-My Documents-LAURA-WEB-BABYPAINTING-resized-600When it is cold outside and you are stuck inside your house, it is always good to have something to keep your hands busy and your mind occupied. What better way to stay busy than by working on some arts and crafts that you can use to make the interior or exterior of your home a little more beautiful.  With a little creativity, there are lots of simple and attractive crafts you can make with just the materials you have lying around your home. Keep reading for some examples that will hopefully give you inspiration and spark your inner artist.

Bead Icicles

Want to replicate the beauty of hanging icicles with some materials that will never melt away?  Then make yourself some bead icicles.  Bead icicles are easy to make and can be created by artists of all ages and ability levels.  To make your bead icicles, get a roll of fishing line and a selection of clear glass beads.  For best results, use glass beads of varying shapes and sizes.  Start by tying the line around a smaller bead that will serve as the bottom of your icicle.  Then add other glass beads above that one.  The more beads you add, the longer your glass icicle will grow.

Paper Snowflakes

Paper snowflakes are a classic winter craft that people have been making for generations.  Not only are they easy to make, but also with a little practice, you can make paper snowflakes that will be a beautiful addition to your home’s décor.  To make paper snowflakes, get a white piece of paper and cut it into a square or circle.  Then, fold the paper in halves or into corners.  Cut squares, triangles, circles, and other designs along the edges of the paper.  Once you are finished cutting, unfold the paper and admire your snowflake.

White Rock Snowmen

White rock snowmen are an easy craft that you can place inside or outside once they are finished.  To make them, gather some flat, white rocks and find a few small, back beans.  Stack three of the white rocks on top of each other, with the largest one on the bottom and the smallest on top.  Then, glue the beans onto the top rock.  The result will look like a tiny snowman with two pieces of coal for his eyes.

Tips to Keeping a Warmer Home

silquartette_easyrise_livingroom_5-resized-600With temperatures low and energy prices at an all-time high, this winter it is more important than ever to be clever and frugal about how you keep your home warm.  Fortunately, there are many quick and inexpensive ways that you can make your home more resistant to the cold.  Here are several useful tips on how you can keep your home’s heat in, and the winter cold out.

Check Your Windows

When the weather starts to get cold, you should take a quick walk around your house to make sure that all of your windows are in good condition.  Many homeowners make the mistake of not completely closing their windows after the summer heat departs.  Even if your windows are open just a crack, a lot of heat can be escaping from your home.  One easy way to check if your windows are air-tight is to burn a stick of incense inside your home.  After the stick is burnt, walk around your house and see if you can smell the aroma.  If any of your windows are leaking air, the smell will be especially concentrated near them.  You can fix leaks with clear, plastic coverings purchased from your local home improvement store.

Add Window Treatments

Many window treatments can add significantly to the R-value of your windows. In fact, installing cellular shades is much less expensive and is sometimes more energy efficient than replacement windows!  Consider adding blinds, shades or fabric treatments to your windows to keep the cold out in the winter. The staff at Pucher’s Decorating can help guide you through the many choices in style, color and energy efficiency.

Shut Off Unused Rooms

You may have rooms in your house that you rarely ever use.  If so, it does not make sense to pay for the energy needed to heat those rooms.  Instead, close all heating vents that are in those rooms, and then shut the doors that lead to them.  This way, your unused rooms won’t be heated and your total energy bill will be that much lower.  One other advantage is that when you are trying to heat up your house, you will notice the rooms you do use getting warmer, faster.

Cook More

The more you cook, the warmer at your house will be.  A normal stove gives off a lot of heat, and this heat can serve the double purpose of not only preparing your dinner, but also keeping your kitchen and adjacent rooms warm.  If you cook frequently during the winter, you will notice that your home stays warmer without you needing to set your thermostat so high.  Another useful tip is to burn candles around your house.  Though they only have small flames, candles give off a surprising amount of heat.  Just be careful that you don’t leave burning candles unattended.

Why Choose Benjamin Moore Paints?

AURAMATTE-resized-600When it comes time to paint your house, make sure that you choose paint by Benjamin Moore.  Of all the many brands of paints available on the market today, no other brand is as widely used or trusted.  Why is that?  Because Benjamin Moore has a long history of producing warm, vibrant colors and quality products that will make any room in your house look good for years to come.  When you buy paint from them, you know that you are getting a paint that will not only look good on the paint swatch in the store, but also on the walls of your own home.  Here are just a few of the many reasons that professional painters and do-it-yourself homeowners rely on their high-quality line of interior and exterior paints.

Unbeatable Selection

No other brand offers the variety of colors that you get to choose from when you choose Benjamin Moore.  If you count their entire line of paints, you will have more than 3400 different hues to select from. They understand that when you are choosing a color for your favorite room, you don’t just want a color that is almost right, or close to what you have in mind.  No, you want exactly the right color, and that is what you will get.  As just one example of the tremendous selection you get from Benjamin Moore, their 3400 colors of paint include 164 shades of white. Imagine how many shades of red, blue, or yellow you will have to choose from!  And when you visit your local interior decoration specialist and tell them what sorts of colors you are looking for, they will be able to create for you the perfect palette of colors to choose from.

Exactly What You Want

Because of their devotion to giving customers exactly what they want, Benjamin Moore is able to match any color offered by any of their competitors.  Simply bring in a sample showing the color you have in mind, and your local home painting specialist will make a bucket of that color especially for you.  But before you get going on your painting project, Benjamin Moore wants to be sure you are entirely satisfied with the color you got.  That’s why you can request a pint-sized Color Sample of any shade you want.  Take it home and try it out. You don’t need to purchase a full-size bucket until you are totally happy with the color you have chosen.

Nylon vs. Polyester Carpet: Part II

 smartThe answer is SmartStrand!

In our last blog on this topic, we reviewed the pros and cons of nylon and polyester because each fiber has different strengths and limitations.  Nylon carpet fiber is inherently stronger and more durable while polyester fibers tend to be more stain-resistant and colorfast.  But, what if I told you there is a new type of carpet fiber that gives you both?  There is and it’s called Smartstrand.

SmartStrand (aka triexta) is a new carpet fiber that was developed seven years ago by Dupont.  Today it is one of the fastest growing carpet products because it delivers all the benefits you could ask for in a carpet – it has softness, resiliency, stain resistance and “green” qualities that you never thought you could get from one carpet alone.  How does SmartStrand do it?

Lifetime Stain Protection

Most food and beverages are acidic and unfortunately, traditional carpet fibers are attracted to acid-based stains.  SmartStrand is NOT attracted to acid-based stains and so stains don’t penetrate the fiber.  As a result, you often only need to use water to rinse the stain off the fiber instead of using harsh chemicals to draw the stain out.  Even difficult stains like red wine and mustard clean up easily with mild soap and water.

Additionally, SmartStrand’s inherent stain and soil resistance will last for the life of the product.  So there is no need to apply topical anti-soiling treatments to the carpets ever.  So if you’re concerned about indoor air quality and off-gassing, you can rest easy knowing that you won’t have to use harsh chemicals to keep your carpet clean.

durabilityExceptional Durability

Smartstrand fibers have a unique “kinked” structure (pictured right) which allows them to bend easily, rebound quickly and resist the crushing and matting that can occur with other carpet types.   To see SmartStrand’s durability & built-in stain resistance for yourself, watch the SmartStrand Zoo Challenge and see how the carpet stands up to 10 zoo animals!

If SmartStrand carpets can survive that kind of punishment, imagine how well it will perform for the most active home and family!

Better for the Environment

Other than wool, SmartStrand is the most “natural” carpet you can buy.  37% of SmartStrand fiber is made from renewable resources like corn sugar instead of the petroleum-based ingredients that are used to make other carpets.  This reduces our dependency on foreign oil.  In addition, the production of SmartStrand requires 30% less energy and produces 67% less greenhouse-gas emissions. So you can feel good about buying SmartStrand!

soft carpet… and the Softest Carpet You’ll Ever Touch!

When SmartStrand was first introduced, it boasted a significantly softer feel than nylon and polyester.  Last year, Karastan one-upped itself with the introduction of SmartStrand Silk, which claims to be the world’s most luxuriously soft carpet.  One touch of SmartStrand Silk’s softness and you’ll be sold.  (Imagine getting out of bed in the morning and sinking your toes in the world’s softest carpet – heavenly!)  The best part is that SmartStrand Silk is every bit as durable and stain-resistant as its predecessor.  So now you can have the softest carpet ever in your home as well as the performance that only a SmartStrand carpet can deliver.

Consumers seem to agree with all of the press.  SmartStrand has the highest consumer satisfaction rankings in the carpet industry.  In fact, 98% of SmartStrand customers say they would buy it again.

Key Takeaway:  Karastan SmartStrand Carpets are -

  • The ONLY carpets with built-in stain & soil-resistance that never washes or wears off
  • Have a tightly woven structure that offers more resilience & durability
  • Constructed of 37% renewable materials, reducing energy use and emissions
  • “And the softest carpet you’ll ever touch!”

Decorating With Roman Shades

roman-styles-resized-600Create a Custom Look for Your Home with Roman Shades

It’s no wonder that Roman shades are among the most popular window treatment option. They are one of the most versatile window treatments you can buy.   In fact, this is one window treatment that both men and women tend to agree on.  First, they look great on both horizontal and vertical windows (even sliders).  They can be insulating as well as light-filtering or blocking.   But they not only do a great job of covering your windows, they also add fashion, color, softness and character to your decor. The only challenge is deciding on the right style and fabric to create the perfect look for your home.  So let’s help you get started designing your shades.

Which Roman Shade is Right for My Room?

There are many different styles of Roman shades, so you are sure to find one that will complement the style of your home.  Take a look at the guide to the right.

The plain or flat panel and hobbled styles are simple and classic.   They will lend a streamlined, tailored look for your windows.

The relaxed or linen fold styles will create a more casual look.

Balloon, London and Opera shades add softness and a feminine touch to your decor.

Express Your Style with the Perfect Fabric

So you’ve settled on a style of shade.  When selecting your fabric, there are a couple of things to consider.

1.  First, as you saw from the diagram above, certain styles work best with certain types of fabrics.  For example, balloon shades will hang much better if they are made of lightweight fabrics.  So you wouldn’t try to make balloon shades out of microsuede.

2.  How much light do you want to let in?  Obviously, sheer fabrics are more light-filtering and heavier fabrics are more light-blocking.  So consider how you will use the room and decide how much light control you need.  Of course, whatever material you choose, you can always opt to have the shades lined for extra privacy.

3.  Are you concerned about energy efficiency?  Heavier fabrics will be more insulating and might be a good choice for north-facing windows in colder climates or south-facing windows in hotter climates.

4.  What kind of look and feel do you want to create in this space?   Natural fabrics like cotton, linen and grainsack will help to create a casual, country feel.  An embroidered silk would look great in traditional or even Asian-inspired interiors. Woven woods and grasses lend a warm, organic, earthy element to your room.   A texture like faux suede lends a more masculine touch.  You get the idea.  It’s the combination of shade style and fabric that ultimately creates the look.

Don’t Forget to Accessorize

The great thing about custom window treatments is there are so many options to help you create shades that reflect your personal style.  Adding extra details like banding, scallops, pleats, tassels or beaded fringe allows you to create a one-of-a-kind look for your interiors.  Adding a coordinating valance above the shade completes the look.

roman-shade-country-french-resized-600Some Gorgeous Examples

Note how the arched roman shade (pictured right) adds just the right amount of warmth, color and softness to an otherwise neutral kitchen.  The provencale-styled fabric and the relaxed style of the shade are a perfect fit for this country french kitchen.

roman-shade-grosgrain-band-resized-600A simple hobbled Roman shade with black grosgrain banding is the perfect complement to the patterned wallpaper in this traditional half-bath.

roman-shade-woven-wood-dining-resized-600Woven woods are not usually an obvious choice for a formal dining room.  But the Hunter Douglas Provenance woven wood shades (pictured, right, in Safari) create an exotic feel in this otherwise traditional space.   Because they are not tightly woven, they do a beautiful job of filtering daylight.

balloon-shades-modern-resized-600Even though balloon shades are very traditional in style, this pair succeeds in creating a more modern look. The geometric pattern of the fabric, along with the playful vertical ties, adds the element of whimsy to this eclectic space.

Key Takeaway:  Roman shades are among the most versatile of window treatments and are great way to personalize your interiors – not just cover your windows.  I hope we’ve given you some helpful hints and ideas to start designing shades for your own home.  The talented designers at Pucher’s are experts at window treatment design and have lots more ideas to share with you.  Plus we’ve got hundreds of gorgeous fabrics to choose from.  Stop in to see us and bring your swatches!
